Taiwan Debates WWII History Amid US-China Cooperation Highlights by Xi and Trump

Date:

Taiwan is grappling with a renewed debate over its World War II history following recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. At a recent summit, Trump praised China’s role as a U.S. ally during the war, specifically highlighting the American military group known as the Flying Tigers, which aided China against Japanese air attacks. Xi also emphasized the cooperative efforts of the two nations against Japan during the conflict.

The comments have sparked concerns in Taiwan, where officials assert that the China allied with the U.S. during World War II was the Republic of China (ROC), the governing body of China at that time. The ROC later relocated to Taiwan in 1949 after losing the Chinese civil war. Taiwanese authorities have accused Beijing of using this wartime history to bolster its own historical narrative.

Within Taiwan, this issue has stirred political tension. Opposition figures have criticized the Taiwanese government for seemingly distancing itself from the ROC’s history prior to 1949. This internal discord highlights the complexity of Taiwan’s historical and political identity, especially in the face of Beijing’s narratives.

Experts suggest that the renewed focus on U.S.-China cooperation during World War II might complicate Taiwan’s efforts to define its historical and political stance while navigating its relationship with the United States. The historical legacy of wartime China remains a contentious topic in the ongoing discourse between Beijing and Taipei.
