BRICS Urged by Xi Jinping to Protect Sovereignty During Iran-US Conflict

Date:

At the BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of upholding national sovereignty and non-interference in domestic affairs, urging BRICS nations to unite against any such violations. He highlighted that the ongoing tensions between Iran and the United States are detrimental to the global community’s interests and called for collective efforts to foster peace, particularly in the conflict-ridden Middle East. Xi’s statement underlines BRICS’ potential role in mediating international disputes and upholding these principles.

The summit, which gathers leaders from major emerging economies, is concentrating on issues of trade, investment, and significant global conflicts. Alongside President Xi, prominent figures including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian are participating in the discussions. The meeting occurs against the backdrop of several international tensions, including the Iran-US conflict, the Russia-Ukraine war, and persistent strains in US-China relations.

As China collaborates with other BRICS members, Xi expressed commitment to promoting stability and peace. The summit aims to bolster BRICS’ influence as a representative of emerging and developing nations, seeking to address and perhaps mitigate some of these critical global issues. By advocating for a constructive role in international affairs, Xi’s remarks set the tone for the bloc’s potential contributions to resolving disputes.

Xi’s visit to India marks his first since 2019, occurring as China and India seek to mend their bilateral relationship following years of tension. The summit provides a platform for Xi and Modi to engage in bilateral talks, potentially paving the way for improved ties between the two nations. The discussions between the leaders of BRICS countries reflect the importance of diplomatic engagement in navigating global challenges.
