UN’s New Map Ignites Controversy Over Japan’s Northern Island Dispute

Date:

A newly introduced world map using the Equal Earth projection has ignited controversy over the depiction of certain territories, prompting Japan to call for changes in how the Kuril Islands are represented. This map projection aims to depict the sizes of continents more accurately compared to the widely used Mercator projection. Consequently, Africa appears much larger, while Europe and North America look smaller than they do on conventional maps.

The heart of the dispute lies in Japan’s objection to the portrayal of the Kuril Islands. Known in Japan as the Northern Territories, these islands are shown in the same color as Russia on the new map, a representation that Japan argues might lead to misunderstandings about its territorial claims. The Kuril Islands, a chain extending between Japan’s northern region and Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, have been a longstanding point of contention and remain a crucial geopolitical issue in the region.

This controversy underscores the power of map design in shaping perceptions of borders, territories, and geographic ownership. The new Equal Earth projection was devised to offer a more balanced view of global land areas. Unlike the Mercator projection, which can exaggerate the size of regions near the poles, Equal Earth maintains the true proportions of continents while still presenting a comprehensive view of the world on a single map.

The debate over the map highlights the cultural and political significance embedded in the colors, borders, and labels of maps, particularly in areas where territorial disputes persist. For travelers and geography enthusiasts alike, the Equal Earth projection offers an alternate perspective on the world, demonstrating how the appearance of familiar locations can vary significantly based on the mapping system employed.
