In a significant diplomatic engagement, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing, emphasizing the necessity for peace and stability along their shared border to foster stronger bilateral relations. This meeting marked the 25th round of discussions between the two countries’ special representatives, focusing on the long-standing boundary dispute. Key topics included advancing boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and expanding cross-border cooperation.
Both nations positively assessed progress in their bilateral relationship, particularly in maintaining stability along the Line of Actual Control. They reiterated their commitment to pursuing a political solution to the boundary issues, aligning with their broader long-term interests. The talks come in the wake of an understanding reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2024, which aimed at reducing tensions in the Ladakh region. This agreement has since facilitated the resumption of people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and border trade through designated routes.
Ajit Doval noted that the bilateral ties between India and China have been gradually normalizing, attributing this progress directly to the maintenance of peace along their border. In contrast, China stressed the importance of placing the boundary issue in its “proper place” within the broader context of their relationship. Despite the positive tone, neither country disclosed significant details regarding the demarcation of the disputed boundary.
Both sides committed to continuing negotiations, with the next round of special representative talks scheduled to occur in India in 2027. The discussions hold additional significance as they precede the anticipated visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September, underscoring efforts to further stabilize and enhance bilateral relations.
