The United States is set to impose a 15% tariff on imports of products made with polysilicon, a crucial component in both semiconductor and solar panel manufacturing. This policy, ordered by President Donald Trump, will be enacted from December 4 and aims to bolster domestic production while diminishing dependency on China, the leading global supplier of polysilicon.
Polysilicon, noted for its ultra-pure silicon form, is essential for producing semiconductors that drive artificial intelligence systems, data centers, and solar cells. The new US tariff measures establish minimum import prices: $21 per kilogram for polysilicon, $100 per kilogram for polysilicon ingots and wafers, $0.22 per watt for solar cells, and $0.38 per watt for solar modules and panels. These actions are part of a strategy to reinforce the commercial viability of US polysilicon production and to secure critical supply chains, which are vital for economic and national security.
China has expressed disapproval of the US decision, criticizing it as an exploitation of national security concerns to limit Chinese business operations. They warn that such protectionist moves may lead to trade disruptions between the two countries. Despite the criticism, the US administration is pressing forward, underscoring the importance of sustaining domestic manufacturing capabilities in these strategic sectors.
Currently, the US has two major facilities producing polysilicon, operated by Hemlock Semiconductor in Michigan and Wacker Chemie in Tennessee. The new policy also paves the way for the US government to create incentives aimed at encouraging investment in domestic polysilicon and related manufacturing operations.
The implementation of these tariffs coincides with a period of robust growth in China’s export sectors, particularly in electronics, artificial intelligence-related products, and other high-value manufacturing areas. As tensions persist, these developments mark a significant moment in the ongoing trade relationship between the United States and China.
