Japan Condemns China’s New Export Restrictions on Chipmaking Chemicals

Date:

Japan has raised concerns over China’s recent imposition of export restrictions on dichlorosilane (DCS), a crucial chemical in semiconductor production. The Japanese government is currently evaluating how these measures might affect its companies, including major exporters like Shin-Etsu Chemical and Denal Silane. Under the new rules, Chinese importers of DCS from Japan must provide cash deposits of up to 99.2%, a significant financial imposition on the trade.

China justifies the restrictions as temporary, citing an anti-dumping investigation that claims Japanese exports of DCS have negatively impacted its domestic industry. The final outcome of this investigation will determine the long-term status of these restrictions. In response, Japan has urged China to avoid unjust harm to Japanese businesses and signaled it might take necessary actions should the situation require.

This development adds another layer of complexity to the already tense relationship between China and Japan, particularly over Japan’s stance on Taiwan. The situation is further complicated by China’s broader trade measures affecting Japanese firms and products that could have military applications. These actions are part of a series of restrictions introduced by Beijing, reflecting the geopolitical strains between the two nations.

Dichlorosilane plays a vital role in semiconductor manufacturing, as it is used to form ultra-thin silicon layers on computer chips. Japan’s position as a leading global producer of ultrapure DCS makes these restrictions particularly impactful on the semiconductor supply chain, potentially affecting global markets.
