China Criticizes US Plan to Sanction Russian Energy Purchasers

Date:

In response to a proposed U.S. sanctions bill aimed at major purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas, China has voiced strong objections, pledging to take all necessary steps to safeguard its companies’ legitimate rights and interests. The bill seeks to penalize the world’s largest importers of Russian energy resources, with China being one of the primary targets.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized that China firmly opposes unilateral sanctions that lack a basis in international law or endorsement by the United Nations Security Council. This aligns with China’s longstanding position against what it perceives as unlawful unilateral actions by other nations.

Lin cautioned that the use of coercive measures and the application of double standards could backfire, stressing that such approaches are ultimately counterproductive. His comments underscore Beijing’s resistance to the proposed U.S. legislation, which, if enacted, could have significant implications for international trade and diplomatic relations.

The move by the United States to propose sanctions reflects ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly surrounding energy trade and security issues. As the situation develops, China’s commitment to defending its economic interests may further strain its relationship with the U.S., highlighting the complexities of global energy politics.
