China Demands Respect Following New Zealand Minister’s Comments

Date:

China has called on New Zealand to refrain from involving Beijing in its domestic political matters. This appeal comes after comments made by New Zealand’s Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, during a parliamentary session that involved a Chinese-born member of the opposition. The situation has prompted China to address the issue formally with New Zealand’s government.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that China respects the development paths chosen by nations worldwide and is firmly against any form of discrimination or prejudice. She highlighted the importance of actions that reinforce bilateral friendship and mutual respect between countries, suggesting that these principles should guide interactions between China and New Zealand.

The incident has led to China’s embassy in New Zealand taking formal steps by lodging diplomatic representations with New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This move underscores China’s concern over the situation and its desire for a resolution that maintains harmonious relations.

China’s response reflects its broader policy of avoiding becoming entangled in the internal politics of other nations, while also safeguarding its citizens and interests abroad. The diplomatic communication between China and New Zealand aims to ensure that the issue does not escalate further and that the longstanding relationship between the two countries remains strong.
