Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi engaged in discussions in Beijing, focusing on easing the escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. Wang emphasized the need for both nations to exercise restraint and return to diplomatic negotiations, a move he stated would benefit not only the involved countries but also the international community.
During the talks, Wang urged a recommitment to existing agreements and suggested that the United States and Iran return to their memorandum of understanding as a foundation for renewed dialogue. He highlighted the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, advocating for its reopening to ensure global energy supplies and maintain the security of international shipping routes.
Wang also called on regional nations to prevent the expansion of tensions to areas such as Yemen and the Red Sea, emphasizing the importance of resolving disputes through peaceful dialogue. He reiterated China’s support for peace and stability in the Middle East, encouraging collaborative efforts to achieve these ends.
Araghchi, aligning with Wang’s sentiments, stated that Iran is ready to re-enter diplomatic channels while safeguarding its national interests. He affirmed Iran’s recognition of the current memorandum with the U.S. as valid and expressed a willingness to strengthen relations and security cooperation with neighboring countries.
The Iranian foreign minister also welcomed China’s proposals aimed at enhancing peace and security in the region and indicated Tehran’s readiness to deepen its cooperation with Beijing in pursuit of these goals.
