China and US Agree to Reduce Tariffs on $30 Billion in Goods

Date:

China and the United States have agreed to reduce tariffs on approximately $30 billion worth of goods from each country, following their recent economic and trade discussions. This consensus marks a significant development in the ongoing trade relationship between the two nations.

The agreement stipulates that tariffs on about 90% of the covered products will be lowered to most-favoured-nation rates. These reductions are set to take effect simultaneously after both countries complete their respective domestic procedures. This move is seen as a step towards easing trade tensions and fostering a more collaborative economic environment.

In addition to the tariff reductions, China and the U.S. have decided to extend their current economic and trade arrangement from November 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027. The extension provides both countries with additional time to negotiate a more comprehensive, long-term agreement.

To further strengthen bilateral trade discussions, the two nations will establish a Board of Trade. An agricultural working group will also be formed to address market access and regulatory issues, reflecting a shared interest in improving sector-specific cooperation.

Furthermore, the countries have agreed to create a bilateral investment board, which will focus on exploring investment opportunities, addressing trade barriers, and enhancing policy transparency. This initiative underscores the commitment to maintaining open and transparent channels for economic engagement.

Discussions on artificial intelligence will also continue as part of the broader dialogue, with another round of talks scheduled before the end of November. A new communication channel for AI-related incidents is expected to facilitate these discussions, highlighting the importance both nations place on technological collaboration.
