Musk’s Washington Fizzle: Doge Falls Flat, Reputational Bruises Remain

Date:

Elon Musk’s 138-day experiment as a “special government employee” tasked with streamlining the U.S. government fizzled out in the Oval Office, as his Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) failed to deliver on its ambitious $2 trillion savings promise. Despite a public send-off from President Trump, the overwhelming sentiment was one of disappointment and unfulfilled potential.
President Trump, breaking from tradition, dedicated the briefing primarily to praising Musk, hailing him as a global leader in business and innovation. This effusive commendation, however, seemed to ignore the significant drop in Musk’s public approval and the reported negative impact on Tesla’s stock, both consequences of his controversial actions within the federal bureaucracy.
Further marring the farewell were prominent news reports detailing alleged drug use by Musk and his opposition to a new tax bill. While Trump quickly dismissed the news outlet as “fake news,” Musk conspicuously avoided addressing the substance of these allegations, leaving a cloud of unanswered questions and contributing to the overall sense of controversy.
The most striking visual was Musk’s visible black eye, which he attributed to playful roughhousing with his young son. This seemingly minor injury became a powerful metaphor for the metaphorical bruises his reputation had sustained during his brief, but ultimately unsuccessful, attempt to shake up Washington. His final critique of the left’s “moral flaw” underscored his polarizing persona.
