Miami Meeting Set as Trump Pushes for Rapid Peace Deal

Date:

With a high-level meeting scheduled in Miami this weekend, President Donald Trump is pushing for a rapid conclusion to the war in Ukraine. Trump urged Kyiv on Thursday to “move quickly” on a peace deal, warning that delays could jeopardize the progress made so far. He cited Russia’s unpredictability as a key reason for urgency.
The weekend talks will feature US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner meeting with Russian officials. This engagement follows recent consultations with Ukraine in Berlin. The flurry of diplomatic activity indicates that the Trump administration is prioritizing a swift resolution to the conflict.
“Well, they’re getting close to something,” Trump remarked to reporters. However, he added a caveat: “Every time they take too much time, then Russia changes their mind.” This observation serves as a direct pressure on Ukrainian officials to finalize terms before the political landscape shifts.
Despite the pressure, fundamental disagreements persist. Ukraine has stated it will not cede territory, with a strong focus on retaining the Donbas. Russia, however, has made territorial concessions a non-negotiable demand. The incompatibility of these positions poses a significant challenge to any quick resolution.
Russia continues to occupy Crimea and parts of four other Ukrainian regions. Moscow has called for a Ukrainian withdrawal from the Donbas as part of its peace conditions. Reports suggest that Russian negotiators have been unwilling to compromise, leaving Ukraine in a difficult position as Trump calls for speed.
