Chinese President Xi Jinping has introduced the Global Governance Initiative (GGI) at the recent “SCO Plus” meeting in Tianjin, emphasizing the need to reform and strengthen international governance amid rising global challenges.
The initiative calls for a system rooted in the UN Charter, promoting fairness, multilateralism, sovereign equality, and people-centered cooperation. Xi highlighted five guiding principles: respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law, support for multilateralism, prioritizing people’s welfare, and implementing practical actions.
The GGI seeks to address current shortcomings in international institutions, such as underrepresentation of the Global South and limited effectiveness, while aiming to create a more equitable system for all nations, particularly developing ones. It builds on China’s earlier proposals — the Global Development, Security, and Civilization Initiatives — to advance peace, security, and shared prosperity.
China has pledged to continue working with all countries to uphold multilateralism, strengthen cooperation, and promote a shared future marked by peace, stability, and collective progress.
