Trump cites reagan foundation in move to end Canada talks

Date:

President Donald Trump explicitly cited criticism from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation in his post announcing the termination of all trade talks with Canada.
The foundation had posted on x that an ad from Ontario, Canada, used “selective audio” to “misrepresent” Reagan’s 1987 comments on trade and that no permission was sought.
Trump seized on this, writing on truth social that Canada had “fraudulently used” the “fake” ad. He accused the country of “egregious behavior” and interference in US legal matters.
The ad was launched by Ontario premier Doug Ford to protest 35% US tariffs on Canadian goods. It features reagan’s warning about the dangers of protectionism.
The halt in talks, confirmed by secretary of state Marco Rubio, plunges the vital us-Canada trade relationship into uncertainty, with billions in daily commerce at stake.
