High Hopes for London: US-China Trade Talks Scheduled

Date:

President Donald Trump on Friday revealed that London would be the setting for the next round of US-China trade negotiations on Monday. This highly anticipated meeting, involving senior US administration officials and a Chinese delegation, follows a “very positive” phone call between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday, aimed at resolving the tariff dispute and rare earth mineral concerns.
The US side will be led by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Trump expressed his optimism for the upcoming talks on his social media platform, stating, “The meeting should go very well,” indicating a hopeful outcome.
The Chinese foreign ministry reported that President Trump initiated the approximately 90-minute conversation with President Xi. During their discussion, President Xi reportedly urged Trump to “remove the negative measures” that the US has taken against China, highlighting Beijing’s desire for a more equitable trading environment.
In a notable revelation from the Chinese ministry, Trump also reportedly said that “the US loves to have Chinese students coming to study in America,” despite his administration’s recent threats to revoke some of their visas. This seemingly contradictory statement adds a layer of complexity to the overall diplomatic landscape.
