EU Trade Chief Takes Stand Against Trump’s “Threats-Based” Diplomacy

Date:

European Union Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič delivered a firm diplomatic message to Washington following President Trump’s latest tariff ultimatum. After Trump announced plans for a crushing 50% tariff on EU goods starting June 1st, Šefčovič emphasized that successful trade partnerships require “mutual respect, not threats.”
The diplomatic standoff escalated when Trump expressed frustration with stalled negotiations, claiming the EU was formed specifically to exploit American trade relationships. Despite the heated rhetoric, Šefčovič maintained the EU’s commitment to good-faith negotiations while making clear that Brussels would defend its economic interests.
The transatlantic relationship, worth nearly $1 trillion in annual trade, now hangs in the balance as both sides prepare for what could become a full-scale trade war. European leaders from France to Ireland have expressed disappointment, with many calling for de-escalation while preparing defensive measures.
